Revamping EV Charging: A Crucial Step for the Auto Industry's Successful Transition

by energyEVBASE 20 Sep 2023

The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States has been hindered by a common concern among potential buyers - charging. Numerous surveys have consistently highlighted worries about charging infrastructure, particularly public charging, as a major deterrent for Americans considering the switch to electric vehicles.

In a recent study conducted by Cox Automotive in June, it was revealed that 32% of consumers contemplating an EV purchase identified the "lack of charging stations in my area" as a significant barrier. Similarly, a Consumer Reports study conducted in April found that "charging logistics" and "purchase price" were the two primary factors impeding consumer adoption. Additionally, an April poll by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research discovered that 47% of U.S. adults expressed little likelihood of buying an EV as their next vehicle, with nearly 80% citing the scarcity of charging stations as a contributing factor.

The auto industry is going all-in on electric vehicles (EVs) with massive investments from major automakers. Ford, General Motors, and Volkswagen are pouring billions into EV production. Tesla, the EV leader, has struck deals with competitors to open its charging network to non-Tesla EVs.

Tesla's charging technology is highly praised for reliability, user-friendliness, and seamless billing. Their smaller and lighter plugs make charging easier for all drivers. Unlike rival systems, Tesla chargers have a consistent experience and simple payment process.

While the cost of fast-charging varies, it's usually cheaper than filling up with gas. Tesla's extensive Supercharger network, comprising the majority of public fast chargers in the US, was built to address range anxiety during road trips and has been a key factor in Tesla's success.

However, the broader adoption of EVs calls for more fast charging stations nationwide. Tesla's decision to share its network with other automakers will provide more charging options, but experts agree that significant expansion is needed for a successful EV transition.
